Tesi Niu

I agree .
I thought he improved his catching and was blocked off one bomb .Getting in front of the ball carrier when supporting a break is bad play . If he can turn all those tackle breaks he makes into some thing more he will be an asset . His goal line D def needs work though .

I said it in the post game thread. Generally he wasnt overly poor, but the things he didnt do well, he was shocking at. Pretty much every game he lets the ball bounce way too often. I'm genuinely worried with Cleary's kicking about how he will go next week.

Yup. Never let it bounce. See so many tries off a bomb that bounces.

He needs to learn how to wrap a ball up tight or when to dominate a tackle.

That and being two metres offside and ignoring several calls from the ref. Wtf

...and the things he was poor at, are what I remember being drilled at as a 12yro fullback.

Get your defence right.....the rest will follow. I'd rather have a safe as house fullback, then one who's afraid to catch/get to..... the ball,
but can occasionally throw a good step.

I don't know why, but Niu looks like more of a traditional running 5/8th than a modern fullback from what I've seen of him so far.

I don't know how he would go defending at 5/8th though. And with Mam coming through I don't think we would try him there anyway.

But a lot of what he needs to work on at Fullback can be learnt or could even be done as a drill. Like for example, Have Reynolds (or ask Reynolds if he could teach Mam to) kick the floaters at him in training, with some of the fowards charging at him at game speed.

Pay Milford to come throw up bombs to him a couple hours a week. Pay KHunt to teach him how to catch them.

Maybe we are being too tough on him?

Maybe the trouble with this club is we're still too arrogant.

Why not invite Milf back to do some bomb practice with Tesi? His kicks are as good as anything Burton or Cleary might be hoisting.

An invite to Milf would go a long way to show how magnanimous the club can be. Afterall, we have Darbs coaching Tesi at present!!

It's his off-the-ball play that really needs a lot of work put into it. He seems to possess no game smarts whatsoever. Yes, lack of experience plays a part, but when you've reached this level of footy, you're expected to be able to do the basics. I only ever played in the forwards when I was growing up (despite my pining to be a half or a centre haha), but I still had an understanding of each role in the team and the requirements of every position. You don't necessarily get taught that, it's just innate from playing and watching the game, taking an interest, etc. Do players coming through these days not learn like that?

I can't remember who it was, but I'm sure quite a few years back I read a quote from one of our young up and coming players saying they never really watched league, and preferred to watch the NBA and NFL. I think there's a real chance some of these kids just aren't actually absorbing the game in the same way anymore - particularly the athletic specimens we've been targeting lately.
