The Gillett Sin Bin

Hey BHQ,

I just read this article and the guy is on to something.

The NRL is really starting to bug me and I know a lot of people feeling like turning away from it. Sometimes it makes you wonder whether you are watching League or Union or Soccer. The rule changes, IMHO, are ruining this game and prior to these changes (and Melbourne's wrestle) the game was a solid sport which, while still having some controversy was quite fair and translated well to all levels (from U16s and below all the way up to A-Grade).

The thing that bothers me the most is this balancing out in games. Why does there have to be an equivalent penalty count for most games? It makes no sense. Also, does anyone feel as though the bookies often pick the correct winner, even in imbalanced contests, too often. I seem to remember that the Broncos were playing some BS teams this year and were slated to lose and, guess what, they lost. I really dislike that a professional sporting body can be "sponsored" by a betting agency.

Sorry, this wasn't meant to be a rant. Thoughts anyone?

NRL can solve many problems by limiting video use and having one referee

Apparently archer doesn't like dropping referees because he doesn't want to hurt their confidence.

Is he for real? How are we stuck with this halfwit as refs coach. It's a joke, the whole game is a joke at the moment and I've pretty much had enough

Serious question here - what is it going to take for the NRL to start taking things seriously?

Bill Harrigan needs the job. He seems to be the only person who understands what is actually going on.

It's been my theory that the less number of officials, the better chance of reaching acceptable levels of consistency.
So, I've come around to the "bunker" idea and want only one ref.

Also, saw Cummins strutting around last night at Souffs training - he'd been invited by McGuire to run a session with the team.
Not exactly a good look.
How often do refs come to Brisbane to "run a session" ?

Wtf! Training with the team? How is that fair or ethical?

The most blatantly wrong and prejudicial decision I have ever seen in 30 years of watching and playing Rugby League.

Gillett should have stood his ground. Where were Hodges/Parker?

Cam Smith would have just about walked the team off the field. The Manly "senior counsel" (Lyon, Stewart, Foran, DCE) would have shouted the ref off the field until somehow the penalty was reversed.

The NRL would have him summarily executed if it denied Souths their bloody birth right of a premiership this year.

That decision followed very closely by the Reynolds blatant trip being put on-report, rather than a send-off.

Followed by Trent Merrin king hitting Tate in Origin 2, 2012 and getting the same penalty as the guy he punched.

Followed by a close third to the Burgess/Hunt strip fiasco.

The NRL has lost its way completely. The refs are scared to make decisions. The new rules have Campbell Newman levels of arbirtraryness, and knee-jerk reactions to problems that don't exist.

The Broncos are falling behind because we do not berate the referrees or know how to wrestle properly or have any proper influence or representation into the workings of the Sydney based and centric NRL.

If there's another referee added, it should be up in the box. Not where they can hear the commentators, because then you'll get uber influence from the usual suspects. But if the commentators can pick it up from there, then so should a ref with the same on-field view (especially without the distraction of actually having to call it to an audience). Everything else stays the same, there are two on-field refs, two touchies, a couple of video guys, except they ALL defer to the leading ref who's in the box. On-field, one still handles the 10 while the other watches the ruck (and for the sake of consistency, they don't swap, in fact, like there are forwards & backs in the game, have specialist ruck refs and positioning refs), and they watch & make calls to the box ref, and act as their steward to blow whistles and hand out rulings etc.

Here's a link to the Cummins thing.

It shows how out of touch officialdom really is. Surely, you make sure every team gets the same access time or you don't do it at all. It's not only about being impartial but being seen to be impartial.

Your last two lines are two of the truest ever written on this site and may I say, I've written them myself using very similar words here on this forum.

If only super league had won.

We'd be right where we are now in terms of media control, but the weaker Sydney clubs would have been relocated or folded by now.

I too supported the SuperLeague vision and wanted to see its best parts implemented. Some of it as actually introduced but the important things like reducing the number of Sydney teams and punting the insolvent clubs never got any support.

I would have loved for Corey to have approached Cummins before Gillo left the field and say "We'll happily accept the send off and penalty but we'll refuse to play unless you can look at that big screen, watch the replay then still be able look me in the eyes after".
