POST GAME POST GAME [Round 10, 2023] Broncos vs Sea Eagles

Hard to gauge how good we were because Manly was horrible. It really looks like the Storm win was an outlier. Walsh, Walters, Haas all played well. Walsh will make errors but if he can offset those with try assists I can handle that. Still trying to throw some silly passes. Staggs rebounded with a solid game. Nothing flashy but hopefully settles him down.

Did notice that Fleglar drifted out to the sides and was targeting DCE with his runs. Maybe we've done that all season but I noticed it tonight. Was almost NAS like.

I thought Walsh attacking the bombs sent his way and taking them with great confidence last night really lifted the overall team confidence. i know it really settled my nerves and let me thoroughly enjoy the game.

Manly looked like they had nothing, but there was a 20 minute period where they were given some ball and a couple of repeat sets (6 agains) and they did have a red hot crack at us, but our boys just kept turning up for each other. The most outstanding thing about that period was we were doing it without Flegs and Haas.

The other standout for me was the lack of HIAs. Apart from Capes getting his snoze thumped by a loose elbow, I can't recall a single HIA!

I think Staggs was told to focus on defence and hit ups last night and forget about attack. He more than did his job in this respect.

There was no real standout for me. Which in itself is pleasing as the boys are really starting to gel as a unit and play after play they look to know what each other is supposed to be doing.

My one complaint is we still don't seem interested in setting up for repeat sets. Maybe it's because the ensuing dropout has become a lottery and if you get the kick in goal wrong for your repeat set you end up giving a 7 tackle restart. Has the percentages started to favour the idea of dropping the repeat set attempts? Perhaps there is some merit in that idea.

I don't know why DCE wasn't peppering Mam with high kicks when he had Olakau'atu on that right to take advantage of the clear height difference. Olakau'atu has shown he can be very handy taking high balls.

From memory, he went there once and Mam did a good job defusing the kick but then I don't recall him going back there at all.

Very much so. He really went hard at one in the back end of the game, really attacked it with a lot of traffic around and made it look easy. Not long after that Cobbo went up for one similarly, and then not long after that even Staggs got in on the action and went up and snaffled one safely. Felt at that stage Manly couldn't throw anything at us that we couldn't easily defuse, loved it.

Well, I'm still amazed at Walsh's turn of speed when he steps, he is just so good to watch. If the Herbster is replaced with a really quick 3/4, our backline could seriously be the business. Thought our forwards owned the middle and Pat played really well and looked the most like offloading. Would have loved to have seen some second phase play through the middle last night as we had them really gassed at certain points , when we had possession. Pisses me off Flegs departing, I'm sure he's only going to improve at the flippers. Loving where we are on the ladder. Lets Go Broncos, and suck that Siebold.

One thing that I can’t stop thinking every time Herbie scores is - either he himself or the team cheer one another/congratulate. It just seems like a training drill where the task gets completed and everyone moves on to another training drill. On the other hand, if someone else scores, it’s all fist pumps, jump on top of each other and happy days. Wonder what’s the reasoning is.

I thought Manly were abysmal last night and their attitude was on display for all to see as well, they go for a short restart off the kick off after we score our first try? If that isn't telling your opposition you aren't prepared to work for it, I don't know what is.

In fairness, everyone has had trouble defending him this year, he’s been the best second-rower in the comp by a country mile.
That honour goes to our boy fifi, sadly. I wish the nrl rewarded junior development so he could be tearing up for us 😢

Huh how? How has Fifita been the best 2nd Rower?

Definitely seems to be a tactic of ours this season, not just with Flegler, but all of our props.

You automatically gain a few extra metres as the defensive line is usually compressed, and they don't push up on the outside. Then you get a few more metres after that, because like you said, you've got big blokes running at smaller players like DCE, et al.
