Suggestion for a 'Banter' tag. So back and forwards in thread like this can be toggled on and off.

Sometimes they're entertaining reads, sometimes you just want to read different takes on the game.

Re: our improved defence last night. I noticed that the first in invariably tried to hold the attacker up to allow his support to get fully involved. The end result is the tackle lasts an extra 1 - 2 secs longer and gives our line time to retreat and re-set. great coaching as we never even looked like doing this the last couple of years.
What our defence did do is what many of this forum have been screaming for 5 years now. We had some line speed! It did drop at times but it was much improved (the first 15 mins line speed was up there with the top teams). Hopefully now that we have experienced how much more effective it is than our previous no line speed, we actually maintain it.

Although they didn't do a huge amount with the ball in terms of hit ups, capewell and riki did really well in our defence. They pushed up hard off the defensive line to stop the ball going wide, moved laterally well and had great scramble defence. Riki might not become that barnstorming backrower (I.e. fafita, tallis etc) but I can see him developing into a very good, well rounded second rower.

What about Paix?

I like his improvement and like him but I just don't think he's enough to fill the role in it's perfect form. If he's the best hooker then I want him to play the 9 not the 14.

It's like a few years ago when Australia had to have an all-rounder at any cost- anyone that got 30 runs and three wickets was the next Miller and could play a Test all because we had find our Flintoff.

I just don't understand it, for 20 years the WI didn't play spinner no matter what- didn't need to or want to- they played to their strength four quicks.

League teams think they need stuff they don't. Coach/Play to what you have. I know what about those games when your half breaks his leg and then you're stuffed- but I will cop that.

Incorrect. It was 6 again because he had touched the ball knocking it down in the movement leading up to the tackle in question. So, not a **** up.
I hate the rule where a player tries to make a tackle and the pass is thrown into the hand and it 6 again. Happened to Farnsworth last night. I liked the old rule when it was deemed not played at.

Courier mail ratings for the players are laughable. They gave Isaako a 6, but Kotoni a 7.5 along with Carrigan. He wasnt even close to playing as well as Patty. Cobbo was our best according to them!
Did they even watch the game or just grab a brief glimpse of a highlight package?
Staggs was 6.5 at best and isaako a 7 at worst.
Carrigan matched haas for most of the match and that says everything, plus they looked REALLY good with their interplay.
Cobbo was ok and shows promise but there wasnt a point scored he had anything to do with.

We don't need creative geniuses all over the park if we defend like we did last night

Well, I absolutely agree with you that 4 forwards on the bench is better than someone like Roberts - who doesn’t bring anything to the team except a bad spine player if injury strikes. We would’ve been much better off with Jensen in his place.

However I think Turpin is too one dimensional to play an entire 80. We have great forward depth though so it is a legitimate argument you have to make use of them.

Staggs and Cobbo are a 6 for me, otherwise i agree.
I wouldn’t give Cobbo more than a five, he made more mistakes than anything. Reminded me of watching Isaako out there. I’m sure he’s got talent and he’ll be a goer, but last night was not his night in attack, his defence was better though.

I assume Kelly will be picked to partner Reynolds, so Billy should be the 9 and Turpin should be 14 next week.

Roberts, Kennedy and Robati should only make the team if there are no other options.

Mate I have gone back and watched the replay as well and @Huge is right on the second one. Kennedy did not give away a six again for not clearing the ruck at the 38th minute. In the play leading up to that he made unintentional contact with the ball giving rise to Souths getting a tackle count restart.

He was responsible for placing us under pressure at the 37th minute by giving away possession with a penalty for playing the ball incorrectly on our 30 metre line. But that was a lazy mistake that a number of others made. I rated his game as solid.

I didn't initially claim what it was for. When Huge spat the dummy and claiming he knocked the ball out, I suggested that it sounded more like a ruck infringement then.

Regardless, his actions caused a 6-again late in the tackle count defending our line, that is the point I made. If Huge wants to claim it was unfair or unlucky, I could find you 100 penalties or errors that Broncos players have conceded that were similarly unlucky or unfair, but it doesn't change the fact that they occurred and it put the team under pressure.

Unintentionally or not, he didn't clear the ruck then did he. Gave away a 6 again. On the last. Let the record show. Only someone like you would die on a hill like this.

I really don't have a dog in this fight, so I will leave it at this. The bolded suggests otherwise. In any event, do you consider that it is appropriate to castigate a player for giving away a 6 again when he is involved in despate defence on our try line and in the act of making a tackle makes unintentional contact with the ball whilst making an effective tackle? It was accidental contact from my view of the incident.

Kennedy deservedly deserves criticism for the lazy play the ball at the 30 metre line which cost us a penalty in circumstances where we were in possession and trying to work it out of our danger zone. That did place us under pressure.

That was my response to Huge claiming it was for knocking the ball down resulting in a penalty. What else would it be for then? A strip? If it was unintentional it would be a knock-on or play on. If it was after the held call, it means he was still in the ruck, hence my hypothesis above.

The point remains, someone said he had two errors, Huge asked what the other was for, I said it was a 6-again on the last on our line. Was I wrong? If it wasn't Kennedy or maybe Isaako, Huge wouldn't fly off the handle, so him criticising others of bias is hilarious.
