Sack Griffin/New Coach Discussion

For what its worth (not much imo), the 'NRL Lurker' posted on friday that Griffen is completely safe at the Broncos and is unlikely to be going anywhere in the near future.

For what its worth (also no much), I rate Griffen highly as a man and a people motivator, though some of his decisions leave me completely baffled.

Getting Kevin Walters as assistant coach should help immensely IMO and maybe, just maybe, he can teach Griffin how to use the bench. His use of the bench is my biggest criticism of Griffin as a coach, it's always underutilised, I would hammer him for poor attack but the truth is we've lost 4/5 of our backline for most of the year so I'm reserving judgement to see how he goes when we have Barba next year and possibly Milford with KW as assistant coach. Things are looking up for next year.

I think we should stick with Griffin. That aside, I think it has been a poor season regardless of where we finish. The only thing that would salvage it is if we advance to week 2 of the finals. He needs to get us one better than last year, imo.

Griffin is an 'aight dude, but it's painfully obvious he's a horrific tactician. We at least need a good attacking assistant coach...and a good defensive one too.

...enter Kevin Walters.

I dunno about him. Melbourne hasn't really changed the way they play since 06. What tactics did he come up with?

How the **** would we know

Not sure but I think he has to be better than whatever we've got atm.

On last week's "Broncos Insider", Christian Woolf dixit:

"We obviously follow Hook's direction, but during training, Kearney takes care of defence and I am responsible for the attack".

I'm starting to like what we're seeing from our attack with Hunt showing patches of brilliance, while Macca and Prince went up a notch.

On the other hand, Kearney's defence is no surprise, as our missed tackles count and (lack of) line speed shows, but it's our second halves that are killing us in many games, which indicates a lack of fitness, be it mental, physical or both. Our missed tackles average in the first half is not even that bad, but the second half increases by 61%.

While our attack may miss some spark here and there, our backline injuries and Maranta's presence was certainly of influence as well, but I still think our defence has been the biggest contributor for our less than average season.

Out of curiosity, I measured us against the best team in the comp so far, and while we "only" miss 35% more tackles than them in the first halves, in the end we miss 50% more tackles than them on average.
With numbers like these, we will be cannon fodder in the finals, should we reach them:

What about Darren Lockyer as attacking coach? Don't think there would be anyone better qualified.

Yeah, he'd be great. He was sort of an on field coach in 2011. He always said he didn't want to be a fulltime coach though, didn't he?

M8, don't forget to take your meds from your mum and go sit out for a bit.

What's that even mean? I hope that wasn't meant to be an insult, cos it was bloody pathetic

I'm still not convinced about Hook as a good coach of footy. I think he only made the change at half because his job was on the line, prior to that he stubbornly stuck to his no frills style even after losing 20 of 27. Maybe he has finally decided his style won't win a comp and is adjusting to allow some risk but the jury is well and truly out for mine.

Do I? That's interesting, how exactly do I do that?

You know nothing about me and I haven't insulted you so why don't we leave dispersions about someone's personality out of this yeah?

He has been credited ( by Bellamy) with a few set plays from scrums and penalty restarts. It's something we could do with, there are plenty of opportunities in the modern game with structured defences and we need a bit of variety at times. Also if we use Hoff from fullback he needs some structured plays where he doesn't have to think/pass for us to get the best from him
