Round 4 - Broncos vs. Storm - Post Match Discussion

I'm gonna echo what many have already said here, but what the hell...been thinking about it all game :tongue_smilie: I'm stoked, disappointed, and pissed off.

Stoked: The EFFORT!! Everyone put in tonight, it was outstanding, it really was. Brilliant work, we took it up to them and look what happened...if that's not a confidence boost I don't know what is. I'm not going to single anyone out here except:

Hunt. MUST start, or play a hell of a lot more minutes. We picked up so much when he came on, and fell away when he left the paddock. I really made a point of watching him tonight - he showed great organisation, made the right choice 99% of the time, put in some fantastic kicks, etc etc. And he MIXED IT UP!! We became a bit unpredictable, our guys clearly loved it and you could see the Storm take half a step back. I'm at a loss to work out why Hook took him off when it was clear how much better we were playing with him on the park. We might've set him back in his career but if he gets some proper time, he might still come good. Outstanding tonight IMO.

Thaiday really stood up tonight, was very impressed. Thought he might lose it a bit after being held in the scrum but turned the cranky energy into go-forward - loved it! And Kahu showed great nous to change his defence after the early grit-your-teeth-and-hope moments; he was solid tonight, definitely impressed with him too.

And Hoffman - great energy, good lines, fantastic work. Really showed the enthusiasm and confidence he seemed to be lacking for a large part of last year, can't wait to see more - hope the injury isn't as bad as it seems.

I know everyone might not agree with me here, but I'm disappointed in Norman. Yeah he chimed into the back line a bit, but that's what he's MEANT to do. Against: he was dicking around with his kick returns; would not pass even when he had an option; and I was just disappointed with him tonight really, he just didn't seem up to the standard the others were playing at.

Other than that, it's hard. Wal and Prince made some dumb errors, but were generally pretty good. Still a bit annoyed with Wal's 5th tackle options at times. Still annoyed about the one-out running and lack of support play, but both were better for the best part of tonight.

Pissed off: Is it cliche to have a go at the refs? Thaiday was clearly held in the scrum, and Slater was offside in another. Having said that though, it didn't change the game dramatically, if at all. We still had our chances to take it, and we weren't quite good enough...I can cop that. And poor Hoffman/Stagg...they were great tonight, especially Hoffman.

Main thing for me tonight was Hunt needing more minutes, if not a couple of full games. At hooker, half, 5/8, wherever. Before Hoffman's injury, I was thinking:
1. Hoffman
2. Kahu
3. Reed
4. Hodges
5. Maranta
Norman out.
And give Hunt the #7, put Wal on the bench as interchange hooker for Macca. Or slide Wal to hooker and bring Macca off the bench. Either or, just give Hunt a few games dammit!!

All in all, TOP effort and I'm mostly stoked  Don't want to be too critical since we went so well, but there's always room for improvement. Just need to build on that next week and we'll be right!!

We can start a petition about having Hunt start in the halves. Get like 50 signatures, sing a song, hopefully melt Hook's heart.

Next week - I think we should dump Macca to the bench, Hunt to 7, Wallace to 9. I seriously think that needs to happen.

I agree. They have to give Hunt a fair shake to see what he is capable of. Macca could cover backrow in a pinch as well as hooker from the bench.

Great effort tonight, let down by some bad decisions at the end, some bad mistakes throughout, and a few customary defensive lapses. Dead set don't know how the obstruction try was given, but I don't know how Hoffman's first was given, either. Regardless, I thought Slater was a step or two offside on his last try, and I can't believe at that stage of the game with the scoreline that close the ref didn't go to the video. Bet if it was down the other end it'd have been reviewed and overturned. Still, a disturbing lack of urgency shown in getting to the ball and challenging Slater.

I'm so ****ing sick of people always pointing fingers and the scape-goating.
Players made mistakes, but they gave their all and deserved more than they got against the cream (still cheats) of the comp.

Norman played well, our forwards aimed up, we put 5 tries on the comp leaders, but I'm sure people will find reasons to dismiss it. FMD :glare:

/Rant

Really proud of the boys. Lost to the cheats thanks to a couple of dodgy tries.
Hopefully this will inject some confidence into the team and especially the halves. Wallace at 9 with Hunt at 7 needs to happen... Now!

Agree with everything

There wasn't a bobble, he straight up didn't ground it.
not sure which one your talking about, but the first was fair game because the ref didn't blow the whistle before he got it down, there was nothing wrong with his last, grounding was fine.

Well I think that prince is our weakest half :/. Strange to say that. Wallace is showing form. Hunt offers alto in attack but weakens our defence. Unfortunate with stag. I wouldn't mind hunt at hooker, Wallace 6 hunt 7 Hodges 1 regardless hunt deserves a spot the question is. Do we sacrifice Mecca or prince.

IMO McC was responsible for those last tackle **** ups in the last 5 mins. We looked so much better when he was off the field. Norman was fine at fullback.

1. Norman
6. Prince
7. Hunt
9. Wallace

I honestly don't know what Macca is supposed to do when the half is practically standing right next to him or in-front of him.

I agree, I think Macca gave two badly positioned passes in those 5th tackle ***** up.

I agree with Fourex.

I want to see
1. Norman
6. Prince
7. Hunt
9/14. Wallace/Macca about half a game each.

Hoffman has an Achilles strain. I'd imagine that'll be a week or 2 at least.

Watched the highlights, everything but the Thaiday being held back thing looked like a fair try.

I felt the same way tonight as well, Norman really really underwhelmed me, so much so that I was considering wanting Hoffman to go back to fullback next week. Norman's defence was rubbish and in my mind he potentially cost us 2 tries, the slater kick and the last try of the 1st half I think. I've been more on the hesitant side of wanting Dugan, but based on tonight, it has definitely made me sway towards wanting Dugan asap.

Dissapointed we didn't win but was very proud of the effort the boys put in. We stood up through the middle and finally did something with the ball and came up with points. On the bright side I got to meet Ben Ikin and I got a photo with him.

I think the biggest positive with Norman is that he actually passed the ball to Reed and once to Hoffman. We just weren't used to seeing that from Hoffman last year. Either way, Hoffman's biggest strength is his running game, it suits the wing a lot more, where it's all just running.

No Norman was perfect. never puts a foot wrong. I am so sad that he signed with the Eels.
