NEWS Bennett: Broncos players will decide if they follow me to Souths

While I'm not yet outright convinced Seibold is the man for the job, I had to chuckle when Chris Johns pushed Kevin Walters for the job implying every team he has been involved in coaching has had success........I'm not even convinced Kevin will be coaching Qld long-term, coaching an NRL full-time is on a whole other level.

maybe he should tell that to his ESL team ... i wouldn't class a 39% winning record as successful

Seibold took a tired, predictable side that relied on their core group of frowards and turned it into the most electric attacking unit in the comp. That left edge for the Rabbits had shit players (GI is a shadow of his former self and injured most of the time) but he made them unstoppable. He turned a 27 year old bench hooker who’s been flicked by several clubs into the aus hooker. Hell, he even got the Burgess boys to stop dropping the ball as frequently and kept Reynolds on the park for more than 50% of the season.

The rabbits were scrambling to keep him and only went with Wayne when they knew their efforts had failed. Aka Wayne was The emergency choice they came up with in a few days.

Or a change of coach just gave everyone a kick up the arse and players started performing more - and Seibold is getting way too much credit. Another possibility.

Not going to call this guy a coaching genius after one year as a head coach. Lots of head coaches have had a good year in their first year.

The issue with Kev and blokes like Hook and possibly Kearney is that they try to emulate Wayne in terms of coaching style. Wayne's style of being a mentor, father figure, and man manager first and a tactician/ coach second works for him because he's Wayne Bennett.

It's like Trump in the US and people who try and copy his 'style'. Trolling your opponents on twitter, apologizing only as a last resort, abusing people who go after you, speaking bluntly etc only works for him because he's Donald Trump. Neither his nor Wayne's methods are the norm or work in regular practice.

Why did Souths wait until they were convinced he was gone to look at other options? Wayne has been on the market for effectively six months.

I would actually be spewing if I was a bunnies fan. To be losing a guy who turn Souths into a genuine premiership contender with an exciting brand of footy. And to have him replaced by a guy who refuses to adapt to the modern era of rugby league, a guy who has had limited success in the last 18 years.

Bennett gets the broncs to the finals each year yes, but we are never really genuine contenders. To be honest in 2006 I didn't even think we would win but we stole it off Melbourne. They have not let us forget about it ever since. I wonder if Bellamy rates Bennetts coaching?

In 2015 we certainly passed all expectations. We have obviously had many other years where we were in with a good chance but I thought we often overachieved.

Many of us have rose tinted glasses for Bennett. To swap him with Seiblold is akin to swapping Thaiday with Crighton and yet Souths are trying to play it off like they came out on top....huh? I see straight through their bull###t!!

Lol, limited success in the last 18 years?
Never genuine contenders?
2008? 2015? 2016?

Who are genuine contenders every single year? There's maybe one team that has fit that in the last 10 years, Melbourne, and cheating got them a lot of the way there.

Also who cares what Bellamy thinks of Bennett as a coach? I'd be more concerned about him being able to coach a team without Smith and achieve any success.

Agree with most of this. We currently have the two jilted parties trying to convince everyone that they are in fact a match made in heaven and meant to be. I just hope they buy Wayne a helicopter or get him a limo with a chauffeur so he never has to worry about finding a park.

Am I the only person reading through this forum and finding yourself agreeing with both sides of the argument at different stages?...

Bennett is the greatest coach of all time and he has built a great squad, and has gotten good results in recent years despite not winning a premiership...

But...

We havent won a title in 13 years, he hasnt won a title in 8 years, the last 2 years we have dropped out of the finals with pitiful performances, and bennett has 4 or 5 years left in him MAX and the last time we sat on our hands we ended up with henjak

Is seibold the answer? I dont know, none of us do. Is he worth a shot? I think so. People forget that every great coach started off as an unknown, but then again, so did ivan henjak. The thing that fills me with confidence isnt seibolds one year at nrl level (proves nothing in my eyes) or his record at lower levels, but its the obviously thorough process the club went through to identify him as the right man for the job.

I actually think Bennett will win or come very close to winning a premiership at souths, but I dont think he would have got it with us. The players had a great chance to go far this year to do it for him and they played like they did against the dragons. On this point, any player that leaves purely to play under him will do so with my blessings. They had their chance to play for wayne and they showed less heart then the tin man with their performance. If they like playing under him so much that they would follow him to another club yet they still turned in those performances i doubt they will ever show the passion and drive needed to win a premiership with our club when he isnt coach.

So much focus on players following Wayne. Considering this is a done deal with the possibility of starting in 2019 I'm hoping AS has some pull for players to follow him.

Agreed. I feel you've nailed the thoughts of many of us.

3 premierships in that time is your definition of limited success?

I’m not upset about losing Wayne for Siebold, but lets’ be reasonable. We have 6 premiership trophies at the front entrance to BroncsHQ. Bennett coached us to each of them...

Well said. You laid the situation out pretty succinctly.

that might be relevant if we wanted to sign him as a player ... but we were looking to sign a head coach, so what matters is his coaching record, which is abysmal

maybe he should tell that to his ESL team ... i wouldn't class a 39% winning record as successful

It's a bit of a half truth; we celebrate and use JD's ISC (40/51) even though no one watched a single Pride game but we dismiss Kevvie's ISC record.

106 games, 72 wins- 67%

Jets 44 games 31 wins 1 draw and 12 losses- finals and grand final in two years. 9th the year before he took over.
Toowoomba 62 games 41 wins- 1 premiership.

He had two years in France one year in the finals and one year last. end up with 21/57. Clearly last isn't great but his lower grade coaching isn't the doom and gloom narrative you keep telling everyone it's just one bad year in France.

The mole reporting James Robert's will leave Broncos and go to GC titans

The Broncos are poised to lose several players should Wayne Bennett go to Souths next season - with strike centre James Roberts now at the top of the list.
I’m hearing Roberts, a big Bennett fan, will quit the club should the master coach pull up stumps next season and not in 2020 as is currently planned.
But Roberts won’t be following Bennett to the Rabbitohs - he’ll be off to the Gold Coast. The speedy centre played some of his best football in his two year stint with the Titans, winning the Dally M centre of the year award in 2015.
The club has been after a top class centre and has been in talks with both the Storm’s Will Chambers and Brisbane’s Jordan Kahu.
But they prefer Roberts to that pair and if Bennett jumps, they will make their move. Roberts is only on a relatively small contract at the Broncos - around $300,000 - and will get a substantial pay rise on the coast.
As was reported yesterday, star forward Tevita Pangai Junior is also considering quitting the club and following Bennett to Souths, while Matt Lodge is also unsigned.

Nice bit of speculation that. Again, the Broncs are not a stupid organisation, this isn’t something they’ve done on a whim. They would have consulted the playing group before selecting a coach as well.

Should have plenty of cap space to sign SJ then. We'll still witness meltdowns if we sign anyone of his caliber even if we lose one or both of TPJ or Roberts.

We need to keep Lodge as a priority.
